The June 25, 2014 ceremony to introduce the palio banner (drappellone) to the public for the first time.

After considering 83 concept designs submitted for the July 2, 2015 Palio banner (drappellone), the committee awarded the commission to Francesco Mori (click here to see article and photo). As an indicator of the Palio’s strong local identity, only those individuals who were born or reside within the province of Siena are allowed to compete for the commission for the July 2 race. The committee is appointed by the city council and is chaired by the Mayor. The presentation of the drappellone usually takes place a week prior to the Palio, likely on the evening of Thursday, June 25 (will confirm as we get closer to the date). This is the first public appearance for the completed drappellone. Those in attendance at the ceremony at Palazzo Pubblico (City Hall) usually voice their immediate opinions at first sight of the banner (and not always favorably). We’ll plan to have our students on hand to see the event.
